S. Stephen's Story

There's nothing better than our Senior year. I remember what I call the Malt Liquor BK basketball game. I had eaten four doughnuts the entire day and before the game, Charlie M. had the Buick Electra 225 yellow station wagon and we all piled in indulging ourselves with Malt Liquor. I remember everyone looking our way during the game, and waking up with the cold air hitting my face after the party coming across the bridge onto Atlantic Blvd. Can't tell you a thing about the party, although I was told someone put a cat on my head. To say the least, when I fell down the stairs going up to my room, it didn't take too long for my parents to figure things out. Then the nights out at the beach at the hole. I had such a great year following at FSU, my 1.5 GPA for my freshman year landed me back in Jax at North Florida. Bouncing back with a 3.6 for that year and learning from my cousin in New Orleans there was a party school in Lafayette, Louisiana, Jack Obi and I were off to this place called Lafayette. It rained every day the first 17 days we were there. That's where we learned about the Cajun culture because we were smack dab in the middle of it. Mais cher, as they say, we learned a little French = "Laissez les bon temps rouler!" which is "Let the good times roll.!" What a great culture. After losing a year's worth of credits since USL (University of Southwestern Louisiana) was on a semester system, I made it through. Got involved in student government and got elected President my senior year. Spent another year in graduate school in creative writing and then off to Baton Rouge to law school. Most dehumanizing year (the first year) I ever spent. Spent it in the stadium dorm (yes there were dorm rooms built in Death Valley - LSU's football stadium). Huey Long, the Kingfish, couldn't get money appropriated for the stadium because it was illegal at the time, so Uncle Huey got the money for the dormitory which turned out to be housed in the stadium. When the legislature wouldn't give him the money for an entire highway running from North Louisiana to South Louisiana, Huey took what he could get and started the highway in the middle. Since the highway started in the middle was absolutely useless, the legislature gave him the money the next year to finish it. Pretty shrewd fella. I'd say life in Louisiana is banana republic living at its finest. As we sometimes say, "we have the best politicians money can buy!" Met Stosh and Courtney's mother (first wife) who was from Lafayette when I was in law school. I met her out with a friend of mine. We were both working in the legislature that summer so after making a date with her, I got my friend Dan to call her and try to get her to break the date. She wouldn't break it and after marriage and two kids, things didn't work out. ...Expand for more
I took a sabbatical from the practice of law and spent a couple of years based out of Tulsa going all over the globe working for a company that were all staffed by former (if there is such a thing) folks that worked for various agencies such as CIA, Naval Intelligence, DIA, DOD, yada yada. Wound up globe trotting to various countries and after a little over a year in Central America working for that country's White House, returned to Pensacola where my parents lived to recouperate ( got banged up a bit down there). Since my Dad is a Florida lawyer, we formed Spring & Spring . Got an invitation to meet with some KGB friends in Russia and during that stay I met Kat. Six months later she and Arkasha came to the States and it was our second go round. So now, two kids later, Stevie (13) and Alek (8), we're living in Baton Rouge. We moved here in 1999, and so our Brady Bunch is five: I had Stosh and Courtney. Kat had Arkasha who was 5 when we came back to the States in 1995, and Kat and I have Stevie (13) and Alek (8) and Oscar, our Pug dog. So these days, when I'm not in court with someone or pushing paper, I play hickory golf which is golf with wooden golf clubs wearing knickers (sometimes kilts) and playing with golf balls made out of tree sap. If the ball breaks, you have to finish the hole with the largest part of the ball (1890's rules). Still play soccer in the Baton Rouge over 40 league and tennis during the summer. Latest project is a book on George Koval, an American who was decorated in 2007 by Putin with Russia's highest medal of honor. I think he was the greatest spy of the 20th century and my Dad (retired FBI) and my son, Stosh, (he lives in NYC and works for a publishing house) are working on the project together. So this December and/or January, Kat and I are taking the kids to Moscow and Yekaterinburg. Stosh and I will be doing some video interviews with some KGB folks about Koval and then we'll be spending the rest of the trip in Yekaterinburg visiting with the kids grandparents there. It's pretty different there. I don't think I've ever been so cold in my life than on the runway in Moscow. That air was so cold it shrunk my marbles into bb's if you know what i mean. At any rate, it's a great place and the people are much like Americans - just regular folks who love to have fun. So that's the skinny in 25 words or less. Tomorrow's Thanksgiving 2009. So tonight in Cajun tradition, Papa cooks too. I'm cooking duck and andouille (Cajun sausage) gumbo, butter injected turkey with oyster dressing, apple wood smoked ham, sweet potato souffle, fresh cranberry and orange sauce. If anyone goes away hungry it's their fault! From all of us in the land of gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etoufee, alligator sauce picant, and LSU football, all the best.
